Question: In today's world of advanced science and technology, we still greatly value our artists such as musicians, painters and writers. What can arts tell us about life that science and technology cannot?

Phân tích đề:

Thể loại đề: đặc biệt / bất khả dự đoán (unpredictable)

Note: Thông thường có 4 dạng (agreement/disagreement with one view; discussion of two views; advantages vs. disadvantages; causes-effects/problems-solutions).

Issue (vấn đề luận bàn): nghệ thuật giúp ta hiểu gì / học được gì / tiếp cận gì về cuộc sống mà khoa học công nghệ không làm được

Chuẩn bị ý:

- Science vs. Arts:

+ Science: formulates & demonstrates a scientific hypothesis => relies on objective evidence (using the quantitative or qualitative method) => scientists cannot work based on imagination or perceptions

[Khoa học: thiết lập & chứng minh giả thuyết khoa học => phải dựa vào chứng cứ khách quan (dùng phương pháp định lượng hoặc định tính) => các nhà khoa học không thể làm việc bằng cách tưởng tượng hoặc dựa vào cảm nhận]

+ Arts: do not rely on evidence => free the human sense of imagination => the so-called "objectivity" in science is replaced by "subjectivity" in arts => to be of liberal significance & can meet the human demand of & desire for a perfect world, especially given the fact that there remain many scientific limitations

[Nghệ thuật: không dựa vào chứng cứ => thỏa sức để cho trí tưởng tượng bay bổng => cái "khách quan" của khoa học được thay thế bằng cái "chủ quan" của nghệ sỹ/nhân => có giá trị khai phóng & đáp ứng những khát khao cháy bỏng của nhân loại về 1 thế giới hoàn mỹ, nhất là khi khoa học vẫn còn nhiều hạn chế]

- Technology vs. Arts

+ Technology: supplies applications serving human life => attention paid to practicality rather than the emotional/abstract aspect

[Công nghệ: cung cấp những ứng dụng phục vụ cho cuộc sống nhân loại => chú trọng vào tính thực tiễn => không quan tâm đến những khía cạnh thiên về xúc cảm hoặc trừu tượng]

+ Arts: pay attention to the emotional aspect => create immeasurable sources of inspiration or motivation for all human activities in terms of living, studying or working on a daily basis

[Nghệ thuật: chú trọng vào khía cạnh xúc cảm => tạo nguồn cảm hứng hay động lực vô biên cho mọi hoạt động sống, học tập, làm việc diễn ra hàng ngày]

Model Essay Topic Art band 8.0 (294 words)

Artists have long played irreplaceably crucial roles, which cannot be performed by scientists or technologists. Two such roles will be the main concern of this essay.

First and foremost, arts allow us to live in a world of imagination, which does not require any evidence at all as in science. When scientists carry out some research, what they try to seek is evidence based on the collection of actual data, without which they cannot prove anything truly meaningful to the world. However, artists do not have such restrictions, so they have so much freedom in depicting an imaginary world not only to satisfy their own needs but also to meet the demand of the general public, including scientists. For instance, various works of art, such as sci-fi novels or sci-fi films, can help us enjoy the great satisfaction of travelling to faraway galaxies, which is scientifically impossible at the moment, but isn't it a catalyst for certain scientific projects?

In addition, unlike technologists, artists aim at touching our heart rather than bringing us practical applications in the form of technological equipment. As a matter of course, in this modern world, we normally need such tools as a smart phone, a computer, or a television set to listen to music, but without great musicians or music composers, how could we have access to unforgettable works? It is the inspiration or motivation from great music that keeps us alive and able to perform our work well on a daily basis, which is undeniable.

To recap, there are at least two ways in which scientists and technologists cannot replace artists: thanks to arts, all of us, young and old, can live a fully happy life by developing our sense of imagination and obtaining great sources of inspiration.
